Karate

What is Karate?
Karate is a fighting art that was thought to have originated in China, and developed into a systemized style by Okinawan Masters. Karate is a term which simply means "empty hand", describing the fighting arts attributes. Traditionaly Karate was meant to be used for unarmed combat, but its militaristic and spiritual attributes have been adapted to suit the modern day person. Karate develops healthy self-esteem, self-confidence, respect, and self-defense, while strengthening the practitioner from the inside out. There are many different styles of Karate, S.M.A Karate is proud to offer two of the oldest styles recorded to date.

Goju-Ryu

Goju-Ryu is a karate system which focuses on circular movement, flexabilty and strength. S.M.A Karate is associated with Seiwa Kai Canada, and Karate Ontario. Our Goju-Ryu practitioners participate in many professional level tournaments, and are frequently offered extraordinary opportunities to train with some of Canada's leading experts in the style. Shotokan-Ryu
Shotokan-Ryu is a fast moving and direct striking system. It focuses on building agility and physical strength while teaching knowledge of the human body. S.M.A. Karate is currently affiliated with World Kobudo Canada which provides its members with many training opportunities with world renowned instructors in many different disciplines of martial arts, as well as world level tournaments.
